   The word is a colloquial abbreviation of perquisites, as a term for customary or incidental benefits, from Medieval Latin perquisitum, 'acquired possession,' in turn from Latin perquirere, 'to seek keenly for,' formed on per, 'through,' and quaerere, 'to seek' (English quest).
